In a distant past (…9 years ago, so bare the puppy face) I left for what would be my first long foreign adventure: Greece. I left my hometown to work on the Island of Cretefor a couple of months. In the years that followed I also lived in London, South Africa and Paris, and this is the journey that stirred up the ‘ live-abroad-virus’.

I still have a lot of stories to tell about all these adventures, but the most memorable trip that I made in between the working days was the trip to the picturesque island of Santorini. Yes, that small island that consists of white-washed houses with blue roofs. That island that is featured just about on every postcard from Greece. And not without a reason: it is beautiful. Santorini is a Greek island in the Aegean Sea, on the east side of Greece. An island with picturesque villages, quirky architecture, volcanoes, black beaches and beautiful views.

From Heraklion we head towards this wonderful island. Here I feel the authentic Greece. After a spirited climb (600 steps) we arrive in the village of Fira on top of the rocks. Here we just can’t stop walking around and stare, literally everything is whitewashed and with the exotic blue roofs and other blue accents it’s a bizarre paradise. If it was on purpose I do not remember: but with my white shorts and blue shirt I just blend in this place.

We take a bus to the village of Oia, where it is just as incredible. We end up in a typical Greek taverna, are held up by a toothless man with a donkey that did not want us to go and we make a thousand pictures with our old-fashioned compact cameras. When we were there we saw no tourists. Unfortunately it seems that now, 9 years later, that is totally different. Nevertheless, I would like to go back again to this special island – combined with an island tour to all other islands of the Cyclades island group.

Een duik in het archief. In een ver verleden (…9 jaar geleden, so bare the puppy face) vertrok ik naar wat mijn eerste buitenlandavontuur voor lange tijd zou worden: Griekenland. Ik ging een paar maanden werken op het eiland Kreta. In de jaren die volgden woonde ik ook in Londen, Zuid-Afrika en Parijs, en dit is de reis die het ‘in-buitenland-wonen-virus’ heeft aangewakkerd.

Over al deze avonturen heb ik nog een boel verhalen te vertellen, maar het mooiste tripje dat ik tussen het (harde) werken door maakte, was het reisje naar het pittoreske eiland Santorini. Ja, dat eiland dat bestaat uit witgekalkte huisjes met blauwe daken. Dat eiland dat zo ongeveer op elke ansichtkaart vanuit Griekenland afgebeeld staat. En niet zonder reden: het is er prachtig. Santorini is een Grieks eiland aan de oostzijde van Griekenland. Het ligt in de Egeïsche zee en maakt deel uit van de Cycladen eilandengroep. Santorini bestaat uit pittoreske dorpjes, eigenzinnige architectuur, vulkanen, zwarte stranden en prachtige vergezichten.

Vanuit Heraklion vertrekken we naar dit wonderlijke eiland. Hier voel ik het authentieke Griekenland. Na een pittige klim naar boven (600 treden) komen we aan in het stadje Fira. Hier doen we niet meer dan rondlopen en staren, letterlijk alles is witgekalkt en met de exotisch blauwe daken en andere blauwe accenten is het een bizar paradijs. Of het toeval is weet ik niet meer: maar met mijn witte korte broek en blauwe hemd val ik hier niet op.

We nemen een bus naar het dorp Oia, waar het net zo onbeschrijfelijk mooi is. We belanden in een typisch Griekse taverna, worden opgehouden door een tandeloze man met een ezel als enig bezit die ons niet meer los wil laten en maken talloze foto’s met onze ouderwetse compact-cameraatjes. Toen wij er waren zagen we geen toeristen. Helaas schijnt dat nu, 9 jaar later, anders te zijn. Desondanks zou ik graag nog een keer teruggaan naar dit bijzondere eiland – in combinatie met de andere eilanden van de Cycladen eilandengroep.
