Sweet, magical Iceland,
What a surprise. You, and the fact that I am able to meet you before our real journey starts in the end of this year. So unexpectedly, therefore I’ve enjoyed it to the fullest. Though it was short, even in one day I understand why travelers are so touched by you. Why you take them away. Why it feels like you are another planet. Everything here has a different dimension. This is Earth. Your people are beautiful, proud, full of humor. Your shapes are whimsical, your waters are wild and clouds unpredictable. They call you magical for a reason. Your landscape is a mix of phenomenal nature. Volcanoes and fire, snow and ice, black beaches and hot geysers, endless valleys and colorful villages.
It felt like I was at the end of the world. It felt different. No place is like you, Iceland. Nothing is. After all my travels it feels amazing to be able to say that you are not comparable with all that I have already seen on this world. Intriguing. I’m so curious for more. It beckons. I shook hands with your insane Gullfoss waterfall, mysterious shrouded in fog. I was amazed by your warm pools. Geysir. I cuddled an Icelandic horse and enjoyed your surprising kitchen. I drove over endless roads of ice, through the white landscape that continued to amaze me.
The new plane of Icelandair, the Hekla Aurora, showed me your beautiful shapes up close. From above. She took me along your coast while the northern lights sparkled on the inside of the plane. She is beautiful, your new pride. She stands for what makes you so special.
The real northern lights are nowhere to be seen these days. I forgive you, I agree with you that it is not yet the time for it. This was a foretaste of our real meeting. The next time we shake more hands. Longer. Perhaps a warm hug. See you soon, Iceland.
